With a few climbing days to kill before heading to the Dolomites, we travelled to Bosnia Herzegovina for some seriously cool tufa climbing & what an absolute dark horse this place is! With grades from 4+ to 8c, Blagaj is a relatively new but AMAZING climbing area in Bosnia Herzegovina. It was a bit too hot in August but apparently it's an insane autumn/winter climbing destination so we'll be back! Sector Rebro was perfect for climbing with the kids with really lovely slab climbs up to 7a and the most incredible views. And us oldies LOVED Sube sector and Sectors C & D for steep, athletic climbing to keep our endurance up for long routes ahead of our month in the Dolomites. Romania - one of Europe's best kept climbing secrets, its wild mountains harbour a really unique style of sport climbing. We started our trip in Baile Herculane, Romania's most famous climbing area. Unfortunately it was June and there was a 40+ degree heatwave. We'd planned to spend 2 weeks in Herculane but we only managed 2 routes with the kids in the insane heat before we decided to completely upend our climbing plans and travel to Rarau - an incredible remote climbing area at 1600 metres in Romania's north east Carpathian Mountains. I don't think I can articulate how much we loved this area! We spent day after day hiking up with the kids to climb as a family, belaying the kids on their climbs and establishing projects for ourselves but at this altitude, rain can be a problem which is an issue when you've got gear in projects you want to send before your time is up... This film is just the tip of the iceberg where Romania's climbing is concerned. We had sooooooo many areas on our list and didn't make it to most of them due to the high temperatures. But I hope it gets you psyched to visit Romania and explore the wild and the climbing areas of this incredibly beautiful country. We'll be back!!! Old, rusty, or unsafe equipment, anchor connections made of worn-out ropes, or an overgrown route – there are many reasons to maintain a climbing route on the rock to ensure climbers' safety. But who ensures that routes are maintained, the equipment is properly replaced, and the character of the route is preserved? And who funds it all? We follow the Rebolting association from Switzerland, dedicated to the maintenance of old climbing routes and supporting climbers in their maintenance efforts. Members of the association give us insights into maintenance work in the Engelhörner climbing garden and at Gemschiflueh "Chästeleit". Only 1.5 hours from Athens, we found it insane that the rocks around Manikia - Greece's newest climbing mecca - sat silently undiscovered by climbers for so many years. With so much quality rock, grades ranging from 4-9a, single pitch and multi pitch, Manikia is a climbers paradise with new routes and sectors regularly being developed by a collective of climbers and bolters, and the Petzl Roc Trip visiting recently in 2022 in support of the Manikia Project. We've circled back in our van twice this year and with the kindness of the local people, the culture and the landscape combined with world class climbing, Manikia is a place we find harder and harder to leave each time... This short climbing film (the first of many we’ve got planned from our travels!) was a joy to document and a mission to produce but reliving the memories now, it was so worth it. Climbing a route like the Dunn-Westbay direct wasn't just a feat of athleticism, but an intimate and creative endeavor for Arc’teryx Ambassador Madeleine Sorkin. Topping out at over 13,000 Feet, there have been only four recorded ascents of the route that finds its way to the summit of Long’s Peak in Colorado’s Front Range. Four friends travel to Baffin Island for a forty-day human-powered adventure, featuring big wall first ascents, whitewater paddle descents, and wild Arctic flamingos.

Inga is a rather mysterious route, and the name in the epicentre of French climbing was established by a Japanese legend, Dai Koyamada. ✊ It is a weird route as it is a sitstart into an 8c called 7PM JP Chaud, which is my the 2nd 8c I had ever done back when I was 12 years old. I have a great memory of that trip when I did this 8c route, especially as I was there with my good friend Martin Stranik. We climbed in different crags almost daily, wild camping and chasing the highest possible number of routes harder than 8a within 10 days. I think I ticked 19, Martin ticked 18. ✌ This year in spring, having a couple of rainy days in Southern France, I made a visit on a particularly awful rainy day to this place, and I was able to climb these impossible moves and make an ascent of Inga, 8c+/9a. Moves felt much more doable this time, and I think that my progression in lead climbing has not been that significant over the years, but my progress in bouldering has been huge. But bouldering has been absolutely crucial for to really push these boundaries and make a step from 9a to 9b and then to 9c. The hardest routes in the world have very difficult boulder moves. After trying Ice Cream (5.14c) all day in American Fork's infamous Hell Cave, BD Athlete Colin Duffy decided to "warm down" with a flash attempt of Dead Souls—a stout 5.13d/.14a. With running beta from some locals, Colin tied in and gave it "hell."

Soyhières (Switzerland) is one of the crags that I have wanted to visit for a long time. It is the southern tip of Basel Jura—a larger area where I climbed many years ago. Most of the routes in Basel jura are rather short, fingery, savage, but Soyhières has some longer and pumpier routes. I was lucky to have Katy Choong, my teammate from @mammut as a guide as she is the local climber here, and she grew up climbing in this crag. The goal was to sample some of the hard classics, and try to onsight all of them. Actually, those days when I am trying to onsight a bunch of routes in a day are possibly the most fun days for me. I saved some of the routes from the 9th grade for another trip. There is also some potential for more bolting (maybe even cracks). Maybe the world's hardest crack is awaiting there. Chimpanzodrome (7c+), on the Saussois crag, has long been considered the second hardest route in France. This legendary line is 15 metres long, straining the fingers all the way up. A test as dense as it is painful, despite its short extension. In the winter of 2023, our Swiss ambassador Cedric Lachat (more than 50 career 9a ascents to his credit) decided to attempt Chimpanzodrome "onsight", i.e. without flights, without resting and, above all, without ever having previously researched the ascent. Trad climbing is a kind of climbing I always hesitated to immerse myself in. ✊ Influenced by the film Hard Grit, the idea of a bold and dangerous route where you can seriously hurt yourself was not very tempting to me, even though I climbed many bold routes on Czech sandstone. When I first heard of @OnceUponAClimb - James Pearson's Bon Voyage route, I knew I had to go there immediately. It simply looked too good. Relatively safe, but runout climbing with seriously difficult boulder problems on immaculate sandstone in the idyllic countryside of southern France.  As icing on the cake- potentially the world's hardest trad route (in terms of physical difficulties) - I found it too tempting. James Pearson himself came along the way, showed me the moves and I admitted that the route was hard. I had to dig deep, take some rest and execute. Still, it was not enough to do it straight away. I had to take some big falls from the end of the crux sequence, eventually even testing the worst possible fall before I could link all the moves of this brutal masterpiece. In this new 3-part series from acclaimed film-maker Andrea Cossu, we follow Jacopo as he travels from Europe, to America and the UK to gain a deeper understanding of trad-climbing as an art-form, it’s diverse community, culture, ethics and history - exploring what ‘hard-trad’ actually means and whether, when push comes to shove, the grades actually matter. Chapter 1 | USA Jacopo’s first stop is Yosemite, California. Jacopo has visited the valley on multiple occasions in the last decade, but usually with his focus on a big-wall objective. This time, he returns with his sights firmly focussed on experiencing the trad culture and history by sampling some of the area’s most iconic classic routes and attempting one of its hardest.

What an opportunity to discover a place like this! PEN-HIR! La Bretagne! Climbing above the ocean with so much atmosphere is not something I'm used to. I love being able to repeat the historic routes, which by the way, are sometimes tricky, with a rock type dependient on the weather condition... A route as beautiful as it is difficult, Blackbeard’s Tears looms over the northern California coast. First freed by Ethan Pringle and graded 5.14c, this traditional crack climb awaited a second suitor for seven years until BD athlete Connor Herson racked up for the send in late August 2023. Connor was joined by teammate Carlo Traversi, who filmed and edited this gorgeous footage of Connor making the second ascent.

A perfect line, with tiny holds on a 40 degrees steep wall: this is “Excalibur”. In a joint effort with the world’s best climbers, Stefano Ghisolfi embraces the challenge to climb this incredible route. After two years of dedication to the project, Stefano manages to claim the first ascent of what is to this day the hardest route in Italy and one of the hardest in the world: Excalibur 9b+.
