The mountains are for everyone. Meet Maria, Hannah and Helen, members of Black Canary, as they attempt what they have never done before, to summit a mountain. Black Canary is an outdoor club for black women and non-binary people based in Berlin and Munich. It was founded by Tsellot Melesse through a desire to empower her community and inspire more people to get outdoors, and to experience the sense of freedom she finds when exploring the mountains. Maria, Hannah and Helen have very little experience with mountaineering or outdoor adventure sports. Now, they are heading from Berlin to Bishorn for a unique adventure. This challenge is called «Fly», is 550 meters long, consists of 20 pitches – the top three of which are graded 8b, 8c, and 8b+ – and is located in the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland. Parfois les cicatrices sont bien plus profondes que ce qu’on voit à l’œil nu. Dans cet épisode, Solène aborde son parcours psychologique pour gérer tous les sentiments et questions qui la traverse suite à l’accident. Physiquement, la reprise de la marche est difficile. Heureusement, le retour à un quotidien un peu plus normal et à des occupations quotidiennes est salvateur et Solène peut enfin avancer. On October 28th, Babsi Zangerl claimed the fourth ascent of Meltdown (5.14c) in Yosemite. Established by Beth Rodden 15 years ago, the route has become the ultimate trad testpiece in the Valley, and one of the world’s hardest crack climbs. Babsi’s ascent is the first repeat by a woman, and it’s also worth noting that all repeats of the route have been by Black Diamond athletes, with Carlo Traversi making the second, and Jacopo Larcher with the third ascent. In January 2023, Dr. Michaela Kiersch sent ‘La Rambla’ (5.15a), making her the 3rd woman to send the route, and the 7th woman to climb 5.15. ‘La Rambla’ is one of the best — and oldest — 5.15’s in the world. Established in 2003, La Rambla is a benchmark for international sport climbing. Since her ascent of ‘Dreamcatcher’ (5.14d) in 2021, Michaela has re-dedicated herself to reaching this goal — spending more time bouldering, hangboarding, and training. Mina Bakhshi, Haniya Tavasoli and Rabia Hussain had a fair amount of latitude for women in Afghanistan, able to pursue their education, go to work, and explore hobbies and interests. Joining Ascend, a nonprofit organization teaching leadership and rock climbing to women, gave them the chance to test their personal and cultural limits and explore the mountains of their home country. But when the Taliban took over in August 2021, Ascend became their one chance to escape a regime that would restrict their freedoms and future. While the women of Ascend were being resettled in other countries with volunteer host families from Ascend’s network—often other climbers wanting to help—Merryn Venugopal and Michelle Pellette, two members of Yosemite Search and Rescue, were also looking to find ways to support fellow climbers in need. They invited the women to spend a week in Yosemite, where they could safely reunite and find solace in the climbing community. Now, as they build new lives in a country separated from their families, the women find that meeting other climbers in Yosemite is also a connection to home.
